Challenging Assumptions: Police-Involved Homicides
At CRP, we don’t believe that data can solve problems. We do believe that we can’t truly understand, and therefore resolve, any issue without highly credible, reliable data.
We also know that there are law enforcement officers at every level who are honest, hard-working individuals who put their life on the line to make our communities safer. To them, we say thank you.
AND, we believe that we all need to better understand the issues underlying the recent apparent spike in law enforcement shootings. To do that, we need data that highlights the nature of the problem; the frequency of these events, as well as relevant factors (be they personal or situational) associated with them.
So let’s keep talking about this issue. We can solve it. We must. Let’s put real effort into accurately understanding what’s going on and why. And then let’s figure out how to change it so that everyone is safe.
HERE’S A SUMMARY OF YOUR RESPONSES (TO DATE) ABOUT HOW POLICE SHOOTING DATA COULD BE USED, AND OUR QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER THE DATA ARE SURPRISING.
